In what appears to be a repeat of the famous biblical story of Esau \nselling his birthright to his younger brother, Jacob for a bowl of \nporridge, Somalia has sold its birthright to China; but this time, the \nbargain was done for much less than the worth of a bowl of porridge to a\n hungry man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within a year of taking office as the president of Somalia, Mohamed \nAbdullahi Farmajo has given fishing license to 31 Chinese fishing \ncompanies through the Chinese Overseas Fisheries Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the agreement, the foreign fishing companies will have control over the Somalia waters to exploit the large presence of tuna and tuna-like species in its coastal waters.

It is disheartening that this is coming at a time when local fishermen in the country are competing with foreign vessels whose presence continues to affect the fishing stock in the region. One would have thought that the government will empower local fishermen and enact laws that will protect the interests of local fishermen and business; rather, they have further plunged the locals into crisis as they have made the exploitation official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the disadvantages this new agreement will pose to local fishermen and businesses, there is the security treat. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\nSomalia has \nsurrendered Africa\u2019s largest coastline to foreigners which furthers put \nnot just the country but the entire African continent at risk, \nespecially security and economy wise. The heavy presence of foreign \nvessels along the coastline of a country which is a major entry point to\n a defenseless continent like Africa is indeed a thread.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On its part, the government said the agreement was signed in a bid to\n tap into the sector, towards boosting economic growth. How it plans on \nboosting economic growth through an agreement with the China Overseas \nFisheries Association \u2013 a group founded in 2012 to \u2018promote\u2019 East Asia\u2019s\n competitive fishing edge abroad, remains a miracle waiting to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is alarming how a country can sign an agreement with a group whose\n core value is to promote its own selfish interest while exploiting \nothers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

China will begin its operation this month on a one-year agreement \nwith an automatic renewal for an additional year. The Somalia government\n in its defense claims that the foreign vessels are restricted to \n\u201coperate between 24 nautical miles (44 kilometers) to the seaward side \nof the Somali baseline and the Somali baseline in order to protect \nsmall-scale fishing operations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How this will be implemented and how fishing 44 kilometers to the \nseaward side of Somalia will not affect the stock closer to shore and \nthereby put local fishermen out of business remains questions without \nanswers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another worrying issue is the fact that Somalia has completely \noverlooked the activities of Chinese vessels in West Africa which has \nresulted to a drastic reduction in fishing stock due to the opaque and \nunethical measures these companies employ in their day to day fishing \nactivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also, the effect on local businesses continues to raise huge concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
