Somali-Canadian Aid-worker Shot Dead At UN Base Mogadishu

(Mogadishu) 20 Nov 2019 – Former  First Secretary at the Somali Embassy in Nairobi and  humanitarian worker Almas Elman was on Tuesday shot inside the UN/AU base in Mogadishu.

She was heading to catch a flight at the Aden Abdille International Airport less than a kilometer when she was shot  by unknown assailants. The Somali Canadian had just attended an EU sponsored meeting at the UN base.

She succumbed to the bullet injuries at the hospital. Almas is among the three Somali-Canadian daughters of Elman Ahmed, former activist that was shot and killed in  Mogadishu, 1996.

She is sister to SNA Liuetenant Col. Iman Elman and Nobel nominee Ilwad Elman. She had wedded Zakariya Hersi in December 2018 and was pregnant at the time of the shooting.
