Somalia President Farmajo denounces US citizenship

(Mogadishu) 01 August 2019 – Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has renounced his United States citizenship.

President Farmajo renounced his US citizenship despite the Somalia Constitution allowing for dual citizenship.

It is reported that legal experts, nationalities and citizenship authorities from Somalia and US were involved in the process.

”This is to officially announce that the President of The Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, has relinquished his United States citizenship.

This follows the completion of the required legal and immigration processes that had been initiated after the president’s election.

The Provisional Constitution of the Federal Republic of Somalia allows for dual citizenship. The President however voluntarily filed for the renunciation.

President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo has lived, received education and worked in the United States.

He was appointed the Prime Minister of the Federal Republic of Somalia in 2010.” – This is official statement from the President’s press secretary Abidnur Ahmed.
